AUDREY REYNOLDS
Third Girl
26 January - 5 March, 2012
Ancient & Modern presents ‘Third girl’, an exhibition of new work by Audrey Reynolds.
In ‘Coupet’ the artist performs fragments of recorded conversations in
which she discusses Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘Jacob’s Room’ (1922) with
poet Megan Watkins. Told through impressions and opinions of family and
friends, the novel follows the story of Jacob Flanders in the years
running up to the great War. Similarly, Reynolds’ spoken word recording
is interlaced with statements of drifting intent tinged with the
literary and ornamental.
‘Curbelow’ is proposed as a mute rejoinder to the audio work’s informal
exchange. This site-specific sculpture uses mass-produced carpet partly
‘fitted’ and partly following an imaginary or imposed template. The
title, a play on furbelow (an ornamental trim) hints at the work’s
ambiguous footing between utility and embellishment.
Audrey Reynolds (b.1969) is a London-based artist. Recent solo
exhibitions include The dock, Carrick-on-Shannon (ireland) and outpost
gallery, Norwich
