NOÉ SENDAS
SABOTAGE {Crystal Girls & German Diaries}
30 April - 4 June, 2011
"My first thought for this exhibition was to make a facsimile of the
show I had done two years ago, also in Invaliden1 Galerie, thus aiming
heavily at a Déjà vu experience on behalf of regular visitors and on a
suit of issues concerning the viewer’s memories versus the works
presented.
I then decided to sabotage my previous exhibition. I used the existing
installation grid and background color as a chessboard but, not only did
I change the pieces and their positions and thus presented new
possibilities for the future play, but I also applied to the exhibition
(to the bigger picture) the same kind of sabotage actions (sampling,
pasting & distorting), that I had done in each and every photograph
(found images fallen under the public domain) contained in it.
At the end of the show, a photograph dated from 12th.June.2009 hangs on
the wall, capturing the opening night of my previous exhibition in
Invaliden1, while "Midnight, the Stars, and You” is being played next to
it, making a direct reference to the narrative structure of Kubrick’s
film The Shining.”
Noé Sendas (born in Brussels, 1972, lives and works in Berlin) began
presenting his work in the late nineties. Sendas resorts to different
means of expression: video, sculpture, collage, drawing and photography.
Explicit and implicit references to artists and literary, cinematic, or
musical creations are part of his raw materials. Specific concerns
about the reflection and practice of visual arts can also be added to
his repertoire. These include: the body, as an entity that is
simultaneously theoretical and material; the observer’s perception
mechanisms; or the discursive potential of exhibition methods.
